Arkansas producer Rodney Jackson has farmed four decades near Marked Tree, Arkansas, where he’s learned an important lesson: Consistency leads to confidence, and confidence keeps you coming back season after season.
When it comes to cotton, Jackson’s confidence is in PhytoGen® cottonseed from planting to picking.
“Going into planting, you want to feel good that you’re pouring seed from the sack that is going to perform for you,” Jackson said. “With PhytoGen cottonseed, we feel confident when we put it into the ground because it is a consistent cotton.”
PhytoGen cottonseed emerges from the ground with industry-leading vigor, helping to establish a healthy stand that better handles early season threats, such as thrips or diseases. In Jackson’s experience, the early season vigor with PhytoGen cottonseed is unmatched and sets him up for higher yield potential.
“I have planted a lot of different cotton in 40 years, and PhytoGen has better vigor than anything I’ve planted. That’s really important if you’re planting a little early or in no-till ground — PhytoGen is still going to come up,” Jackson said. “When you grow cotton, the faster it comes out of the ground, the better chance you’ve got at making good yields. And PhytoGen has proven that time and time again.”
For strong yield potential, varieties need protection from seasonal challenges, such as nematodes and bacterial blight. That’s another reason for Jackson’s confidence: Every PhytoGen® brand variety is resistant to bacterial blight, and the newest varieties are resistant to root-knot and reniform nematodes. Those traits provide 24/7 yield protection for maximum yield potential.
“PhytoGen varieties have performed well for us every year. We know they are going to yield and grade good,” Jackson said. “We had two hurricane rains during defoliation and harvest in 2024, but we still made 3-bale cotton — and we’re typically aiming for about 1,200 pounds. The fiber quality was good too.”
Jackson also has confidence in the tools PhytoGen brand varieties give him to manage glyphosate-resistant pigweed, one of the most difficult-to-control weeds in his area. The Enlist® weed control system gives him powerful herbicide tools, such as Enlist One® herbicide, plus the ability to choose a wide range of tank-mix options.
“Enlist One has been very good, and being able to tank-mix it with glufosinate gives you the best option for weed control,” Jackson said. “When you put those two herbicides together, you’re going to knock out weeds.”
Jackson said applications with Enlist One herbicide stay on target, thanks to the inherent near-zero volatility and low physical drift.
“We’ve only had success with Enlist One — it doesn’t move around on us. I’ve sprayed it row to row with conventional cotton,” Jackson said. “We watch what we’re doing, pay attention to the wind and follow the guidelines. If you do that, you’ll be able to sleep at night knowing that you’re doing things right.”
For next season, Jackson is excited about two new varieties: PhytoGen® brand PHY 357 W3FE and PHY 433 W3FE. The varieties bring next-level yield potential that has Jackson excited to see how they can take yields even higher.
“I’m hearing that the new varieties are really good yielders,” Jackson said. “I’m interested in planting those next season. I think a lot of people are looking to plant PhytoGen because of the yields, grades and good vigor.”
